One room … some mics …
no amps, no headphones … in the round, in the moment...

DEEP BLUE SEA, the fifth album for Sydney’s The Java Quartet, saw the band relocating to Byron Bay to record. It was there that they discovered that the acoustic nature of both the 301 Studios and the lush, coastal environment would provide the perfect setting to be swept away by their new tunes.

Together with long time collaborator, engineer-extraordinaire Keith Walker (the band's silent fifth member from the very beginning) Java abandoned the usual room separation recording techniques to recapture the old school Blue Note ‘straight to tape’ alchemy. The band soon found themselves deeply immersed in the music.

Celebrating 10 years as a group as well as welcoming Matt Ottignon into the fold, DEEP BLUE SEA is testament to the richness of the quartet's intoxicating, beautifully nuanced sound.
